Sulawesi, formerly known as Celebes is seventh World largest island or fourth in Indonesia after Borneo, Sumatra and Papua. The central part of the island is ruggedly mountainous but mostly non-volcanic, mountainous interior. According to plate reconstructions, the island is believed to have been formed by the collision of terranes from the Asian Plate and from the Australian Plate. As part of Wallacea, meaning that it has a mix of both Asian and Australasian species.

Toraja highland and its unique culture is still main tourist attraction in Sulawesi as well pre historic and megaliths sites in Maros and central Sulawesi. For underwater photographer, the Bunaken, Wakatobi and Lembeh is five stars. As a Wallacea regions 62% of mammals 31% of birds are endemic Sulawesi, they are found nowhere else in the world.
